Six Big 12 student sections are ranked in our Top 25. Did we hit the mark?

The Big 12 knows how to make life difficult for visiting teams. Six of its programs landed in our Top 25 ranking of college basketball’s loudest and rowdiest student sections, giving the conference plenty of bragging rights — and fans plenty of reasons to argue.

From historic basketball powers to programs that have built fearsome home-court reputations of their own, the Big 12 brings a mix of tradition, noise and school pride that can make conference play a grind. The Big Ten also had six programs on our ranking.

These student sections aren’t content to watch the game unfold. They want to influence it, rattle opponents and give their teams an extra edge when the stakes rise.

Two other Big 12 programs, Baylor and West Virginia, just missed the cut, so there’s no shortage of room for debate.

As always, these rankings are subjective. We considered atmosphere, tradition, creativity, volume and that hard-to-define quality that makes a home game unforgettable — or miserable for the opposition.

Here’s how the Big 12’s six ranked student sections stack up, what makes each one distinctive and where they landed on our full Top 25 list.

No. 2: Kansas’ Crimson and Blue

Allen Fieldhouse has a reputation that precedes it, and the Kansas faithful have spent generations making sure it lives up to the billing.

The historic building, championship banners and passionate crowd create an atmosphere that can overwhelm visiting teams.

Kansas students are a major part of that equation, bringing noise and energy to one of college basketball’s most storied home courts.

At Allen Fieldhouse, the tradition does plenty of the talking. The students make sure the visitors hear it, too.

No. 5: Iowa State’s Cyclone Alley

Hilton Coliseum has earned its reputation as one of college basketball’s toughest road environments. And Cyclone Alley is a big reason why.

Iowa State’s student section brings relentless energy from the opening tip to the final buzzer, helping turn Hilton into a sea of cardinal and gold.

When the Cyclones make a run, the noise can build in a hurry, giving the home team another source of momentum.

Cyclone Alley’s mission is simple: Lead the charge, create the chaos and make Hilton a place opponents won’t soon forget.

No. 6: Arizona’s ZonaZoo

In Tucson, the ZonaZoo brings the energy to McKale Center, where Arizona basketball tradition and a passionate student body combine to create a formidable home-court atmosphere.

The students bring the school colors, coordinated cheers and plenty of volume, helping turn big games into memorable nights for Wildcats fans — and uncomfortable ones for visiting teams.

Arizona’s basketball following extends well beyond the student section, but the ZonaZoo helps set the tone.

When McKale gets rocking, the Wildcats have a crowd ready to feed off every big play.

No. 10: BYU’s The ROC

The student section has a name that doubles as its mission: The ROC, short for Roar of Cougars.

Formed in 2013, the group prides itself on being raucous, rowdy and relentless.

Its members bring school spirit to the Marriott Center and make noise when opponents step to the free-throw line, giving BYU another way to turn home games into a challenge.

The ROC is about more than filling seats. It is about creating an atmosphere that supports the Cougars and gives the home team an edge when the game gets tight.

No. 22: Texas Tech’s Raider Riot

Texas Tech’s Raider Riot brings the red, the noise and the kind of enthusiasm that can turn a big game at United Supermarkets Arena into a memorable night in Lubbock.

The student section helps create a sea of scarlet behind the Red Raiders, backing the team through momentum swings and giving visiting opponents another challenge to handle.

Coordinated color themes and crowd participation add to the atmosphere, particularly when conference rivals come to town.

At Texas Tech, the Raider Riot gives the home crowd its own identity — and makes sure the students are part of the action, not just watching it.

No. 24: Houston’s The Cage

Houston basketball has built its reputation on toughness, defense and physical play. The Cage brings that same edge to the stands.

Located in the Fertitta Center, the student section puts fans close to the action, with courtside bleachers that help make the Cougars’ home floor an intense place to play.

The students bring the noise, react to every defensive stop and help build momentum when Houston starts putting the pressure on.

The Cage fits the program’s identity: energetic, engaged and ready to make opponents work for everything. In a conference full of difficult road trips, Houston gives visiting teams one more tough assignment.
