There are plenty of tough places to play in college basketball, but Allen Fieldhouse is the gold standard.
That’s why Kansas took the No. 1 spot in Student Section’s Top 25 arenas with the best home-court advantage in the sport.
Since opening in 1955, the Jayhawks’ home court has become one of college basketball’s most intimidating venues, and it doesn’t take long to understand why.
The steep stands, the deafening noise and the feeling that every fan in the building is personally invested in the outcome make The Phog a nightmare for visiting teams.
“We were down 10 points before we walked on the court,” former Missouri forward Keith Ramsey said.
Start with the atmosphere. When the crowd launches into the “Rock Chalk Jayhawk” chant, it’s more than a pregame tradition or a catchy rallying cry.
It’s a reminder that you’re stepping into a building where basketball is woven into the community’s identity. The Crimson and Blue student section brings plenty of energy, but the noise doesn’t stop there.
Generations of Jayhawks fans filling the seats know when to turn up the volume — especially when an opponent is trying to make a crucial free throw or Kansas needs a late-game push./

“When I came here in 2012, and I came here for a game, I literally left this building saying, ‘I can’t hear myself think.’ … I now recognize that this is, by far, the best college basketball venue in America,’’ former Duke guard Jay Williams, a two-time All-American now working as an ESPN analyst, said of Allen Fieldhouse.
The building itself helps, too. Allen Fieldhouse (capacity: 15,300) isn’t an enormous modern arena where the action feels a mile away.
The fans are close to the court, the stands rise sharply overhead and the sound seems to surround the players.
“I had guys that I honestly thought looked scared when they got out there to play,” former Texas Tech coach Pat Knight said.
Then there’s the winning tradition. Kansas has spent decades building one of college basketball’s premier programs, with four national championship banners, legendary players and generations of success reinforcing the expectation that the Jayhawks should win at home.
That combination is what separates Allen Fieldhouse from the pack.
Plenty of arenas get loud for a big game, but The Phog brings together history, passion, proximity and an almost relentless belief in the home team.
When Allen Fieldhouse is rocking, there is no tougher assignment in college basketball.
