Student sections in college basketball are where school spirit meets questionable decision-making, creative insults and a lot of noise.
As in, a LOT of noise.
These are the students who paint themselves head to toe in school colors, spend hours dreaming up chants and make it their personal mission to ruin an opposing team’s night.
The best student sections are loud, clever, relentless and a little bit unhinged.
They turn ordinary winter weeknights into can’t-miss events and make road games feel like a trip to the basketball equivalent of a haunted house.
So which student sections are the best?
We ranked the Top 25, weighing atmosphere, tradition, creativity, volume and that special something that makes a home game unforgettable — or a nightmare for the opposition.
Is this ranking scientific? Not even a little. These rankings are designed to spark debate, stir up rivalries and give fans plenty of reasons to tell us we got it wrong.
We expect disagreements. Bring them on.
Five student sections just missed the cut: Baylor, Dayton, Louisville, Virginia and West Virginia. Their fans have every right to make some noise about being left out.
Now, take a look at our list. Agree with us, disagree with us or yell at your screen like it’s a bad call with only seconds left on the clock.
We can take it.
Here we go.
25. Michigan (Maize Rage): Decked out in maize and blue, Wolverines fans bring spirited chants and an extra jolt of energy when the biggest moments arrive.
24. Houston (The Cage): Gritty and in-your-face, the atmosphere at Cougars games makes every possession feel like a battle for visiting teams.

23. Pitt (Oakland Zoo): Costumes, coordinated cheers and black-and-gold spirit turn Panthers home games into a lively spectacle that opposing teams can’t easily ignore.
22. Texas Tech (Raider Riot): With a fierce West Texas edge and plenty of volume, home games in Lubbock can put opponents under pressure from the opening tip.
21. Syracuse (Otto’s Army): Inside the cavernous Dome, a sea of orange and deafening noise can make even routine possessions feel like a big deal.
20. New Mexico (The Howl Raisers): The Pit gets its bite from a raucous crowd that feeds off every big play, making Albuquerque one of college basketball’s most intimidating stops.
19. UConn (The Pack): Championship confidence fills the air in Storrs, where Huskies fans bring the noise and make sure visitors know they’re in serious basketball territory.

18. Tennessee (Rocky Top Rowdies): Booming chants and relentless energy make trips to Knoxville a headache for opposing teams, especially when the Volunteers get rolling.
17. Indiana (Crimson Guard): Hoosier tradition runs deep in the stands, where a sea of crimson brings big expectations and plenty of volume to every home game.
16. Arkansas (The Trough): The barks, the noise and the all-in attitude help create the kind of raucous atmosphere Razorbacks fans love.
15. North Carolina: Decades of basketball tradition meets Carolina-blue pride, giving Tar Heels home games an unmistakable energy that few programs can match.
14. Wisconsin (Area Red): Relentless noise and a little Badgers mischief help make the Kohl Center a tough place for opponents to find their footing.

13. Florida (Rowdy Reptiles): With loud chants and plenty of swagger, Gator fans give Florida an extra boost when the stakes start rising.
12. Auburn (The Jungle): Rowdy chants and an anything-goes energy make Auburn’s home floor an uncomfortable place for anyone brave enough to show up in the opposing colors.
11. Kentucky (eRUPPtion Zone): Big Blue pride runs deep at Rupp Arena, where game nights bring a sea of blue and white and enough noise to make visiting teams feel the pressure.
The Top 10
10. BYU
The ROC — Marriott Center
The Roar of Cougars student section brings creative chants, giant signs and distracting cutouts to rattle opposing players, giving the Cougars a distinct home-court edge. This group makes sure visiting teams get anything but a quiet night in Provo.

9. San Diego State
The Show — Viejas Arena
The packed student section brings coordinated chants and nonstop noise, giving the Aztecs a noticeable home-court edge. The relentless energy can swing momentum in a hurry and make life miserable for visiting teams from start to finish.

8. Gonzaga
Kennel Club — McCarthey Athletic Center
Choreographed chants and coordinated displays in an arena that holds only 6,000 fans give this group a distinct personality. Students get loud early and stay engaged through the final buzzer, making Spokane a miserable place for visiting teams.

7. Illinois
Orange Krush — State Farm Center
The organization, the numbers and the orange-and-blue spectacle certainly stand out. These students bring plenty of volume and are not just there to watch the game. They’re there to make sure the opposition feels every minute of it.

6. Arizona
The ZonaZoo — McKale Center
A large, passionate student presence that contributes to the venue’s reputation as a difficult road environment. The noise, the coordinated chants and the sea of red and blue can rattle even the most experienced opposing teams.

5. Iowa State
Cyclone Alley — Hilton Coliseum
The arena is known for its deafening atmosphere, and students help fuel the chaos with relentless energy and noise. A lot of noise. When that Hilton Magic kicks in, every possession can feel like a game-defining moment.

4. Michigan State
The Izzone — Breslin Center
The coordinated cheers, the green-and-white wall of students and the big-game intensity make this arena a tough place to visit. The Izzone has spent decades building its reputation as one of the sport’s most passionate and recognizable student sections.

3. Purdue
Paint Crew — Mackey Arena
A loud, tightly packed student section in one of the sport’s most intimidating buildings. Dressed in gold, students bring the noise from the tipoff to the final buzzer. When the Boilermakers get rolling, good luck hearing yourself think.

2. Kansas
Crimson and Blue — Allen Fieldhouse
The Phog has the history, the banners and the atmosphere, and the students help make it one of the sport’s most intimidating venues. With steep seating and a deafening crowd, Kansas has what we feel is the best home-court advantage in the country.

1. Duke
Cameron Crazies — Cameron Indoor Stadium
The benchmark. Creative chants, clever signs, close proximity to the floor and a tradition of camping out for seats, especially when UNC comes to Durham. These students don’t just cheer for Duke. They make sure opposing players hear about it all game long.
