College Football Petty Rankings: The best social media posts from Week 9

Halloween weekend brought plenty of spooky sights to college football, but some of the best entertainment came after the final whistle, when winning teams took to social media to celebrate with a little extra bite.

From clever costume-inspired jabs to spooky scoreboard reminders, Week 9 delivered no shortage of online mischief.

There were pop-culture references, mascot mockery and even a Halloween-themed surprise or two that made sure the losing side wouldn’t escape the weekend unscathed.

Some of these posts were laugh-out-loud clever. Others were downright ruthless. All of them deserve a place in our latest edition of College Football Petty Rankings.

Here are 10 of the best college football social media trolls from Week 9:

Baylor 41, UCF 9

The Knights stole the show with their Space U uniforms, but the Bears brought the firepower — on the field and on social media. Baylor took a not-so-subtle shot at UCF’s flashy threads with a video game-inspired graphic and a fitting caption.

Duke 47, Boston College 2

The Blue devils didn’t just rout the Eagles, they practically left them seeing double. After Nate Sheppard’s five-touchdown performance fueled the blowout, Duke piled on by sharing a photo of a cross-eyed eagle and a rather pointed caption.

Georgia 27, Florida 8

It’s great to be a Florida Gator? Not so much on this day after the Bulldogs’ sixth straight victory in the series, with five of those wins coming by at least two touchdowns. Kirby Smart is 9-2 against UF since taking over as Georgia’s coach.

Iowa 30, Wisconsin 0

The Hawkeyes have won five straight against the Badgers in the battle for the Heartland Trophy, having outscored Wisconsin 148-26, with the past three victories by 30 or more points, and back-to-back shutouts.

Pitt 34, Georgia Tech 11

After rolling the Yellow Jackets, the Panthers brought a little Michael Jackson flair to their postgame celebration, sharing a victory graphic with a nod to “Thriller.” Three straight losses have Georgia Tech starring in its own Halloween horror story.

South Carolina 42, Oklahoma 25

The Gamecocks piled up 521 yards in their road rout, sending plenty of Sooners supporters scrambling for the exits before the final whistle. Naturally, South Carolina compared OU’s increasingly empty stadium to a Spirit Halloween.

Syracuse 30, SMU 27

After Steve Angeli’s late touchdown pass sealed the win over the No. 19 Mustangs, the Cuse’s social media team delivered a pop-culture jab, welcoming SMU fans to the “Orange Pony Club” in a clever twist on Chappell Roan’s hit song.

Texas 31, Mississippi State 3

Following the rout, the Longhorns took a not-so-subtle shot at the Bulldogs’ beloved cowbell tradition with a two-word message that left little room for interpretation. Sometimes the simplest jabs hit the hardest.

Utah 49, Cincinnati 25

After keeping their perfect record intact with a road beatdown of the Bearcats, the Utes dropped a chilling victory graphic featuring an ominous, red-lit doorway and a battered can of Skyline Chili at its feet. Chilling, indeed.

Wake Forest 51, Virginia 7

After steamrolling the Cavaliers for their fifth straight win, the Demon Deacons took their victory lap with a horror-movie-inspired jab. Virginia got buried on the scoreboard, then Wake Forest made sure to haunt the Cavs on social media.
