College Football Petty Rankings: The best social media posts from Week 8

Week 8 of the college football season delivered plenty of drama on the field, but the action didn’t stop when the final whistles blew. From rivalry-game bragging rights to cheeky shots at defeated opponents, social media teams were ready to celebrate, troll and occasionally cross the line — all in good fun, of course.

Whether celebrating a long-awaited victory, pulling off a stunning upset or reminding a rival of a painful memory, the postgame banter was almost as entertaining as the games themselves.

For starters: Cincinnati delivered one of the week’s best postgame receipts after upsetting previously unbeaten Texas Tech 37-24, tagging Red Raiders billionaire booster Cody Campbell in its final-score post.

Campbell had predicted Texas Tech would beat the Bearcats by 40 points amid the offseason drama surrounding quarterback Brendan Sorsby’s transfer, making Cincinnati’s victory — and its shushing emoji — all the more sweeter.

Campbell also took to social media, saying there was no excuse for the loss.

The Bearcats didn’t need to say much in their postgame post — the final score, the shushing emoji and the viral tag did plenty of talking for them.

Of course, Cincinnati wasn’t the only program with something to say after Week 8.

From perfectly timed punchlines to brutal reminders of past heartbreak, these 10 social media posts made sure the scoreboard wasn’t the only thing doing the talking:

Appalachian State 34, James Madison 31 (OT)

A walk-off field goal. In overtime. Against an unbeaten rival. That perfect season? Not anymore.

Duke 19, Virginia 16

Winning is one thing. Making sure they know about it is another. There’s rubbing it in. And then there’s this.

Florida Atlantic 51, Rice 49

Simple. Effective. To the point.

Kentucky 34, Vanderbilt 17

The Wildcats are 7-1. And alone atop the SEC standings. In football, not basketball. Let that sink in.

Minnesota 13, Iowa 10

The Golden Gophers have all three rivalry trophies for the first time since 1978. Floyd of Rosedale (Iowa), the Little Brown Jug (Michigan) and Paul Bunyan’s Axe (Wisconsin) are all home. Somebody clear out some shelf space.

South Carolina 27, Tennessee 24

The Volunteers’ last trip to Williams-Brice Stadium ended in a 63-38 loss in 2022. Saturday’s result? Déjà vu indeed, Vols.

Texas 34, Ole Miss 27

It was a difficult couple weeks in Austin, to be sure, and the much-needed win came with a parting shot at Ole Miss’ landshark hand signal.

UCF 39, BYU 31 (2 OT)

Hey, you beat the second-ranked team in the country, you earned the right to be a little filthy about it.

Virginia Tech 20, Clemson 16

First win in Death Valley since 2007. Yeah, you knew the Hokies were going to post about that.

Wisconsin 24, USC 7

Crossing out the “Fight” in USC’s “Fight On” to tee up “On Wisconsin.” Well played, Badgers. Very well played.
