In college football, the game doesn’t begin with the opening kickoff. It starts minutes earlier, when the lights go down, the music cranks up and an entire stadium comes alive as one.
There’s nothing like a great entrance. It can be loud, dramatic, intimidating or downright surreal — and college football has mastered all of the above.
Where else will you see a team run through a wall of smoke, follow a locomotive onto the field, sprint behind a live bison or charge down a hill into a sea of 80,000 screaming fans?
These traditions are more than pregame theater. They’re a reflection of what makes each program unique, tying generations of fans to the places, songs, mascots and rituals that make Saturdays in the fall so special.
Some have been around for decades. Others are newer spectacles designed to give the home crowd one last jolt before the football starts.
But which entrances are the greatest of them all?
We ranked 25 of the most memorable, goosebump-inducing and downright entertaining entrances in college football.
Rankings are, of course, subjective — and that’s part of the fun. We expect fans to debate what belongs higher, lower or maybe not on the list at all.
So here goes. Turn up the volume, get ready for some smoke, noise and mayhem, and see if your school made the cut.
25. East Carolina Pirates (Purple Haze)
An intense Group of Five environment that punches above its weight class.
A high-decibel mix of purple and white smoke, flashing stadium lights and pirate-themed audio cues fills Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.
The Pirates charge out of the tunnel and feed off the rowdy crowd.
24. Baylor Bears (The Baylor Line)
A display of student unity and controlled chaos.

The students create a wall of human energy for the team to run through before kickoff.
23. Vanderbilt Commodores (The Foghorn)

This pregame setup is mesmerizing.
Over 102,000 fans at Kyle Field stand in unison, backed by the military-grade precision of the Corps of Cadets.

21. NC State Wolfpack (Fury Statue)
A sleek, modern entrance with excellent theatrical production.

20. West Virginia Mountaineers (The Musket)
An Appalachian tradition that sets a rugged tone.

He fires an authentic, black-powder flintlock rifle, releasing a loud crack and a cloud of smoke.
19. Texas Longhorns (Smokey the Cannon)
A thunderous celebration of state pride.

18. Purdue Boilermakers (The Boilermaker Special)

17. UCF Knights (Zombie Nation)
A loud, high-energy modern environment.
